What to do in Olhao?
The coastal town of Olhao, on the Ria Formasa lagoon, is located in the Eastern Algarve and has a lot to offer its visitors; especially good for nature lovers. Enjoy a guided tour of the lagoon and discover the vast amount of birdlife and wildlife in this area, while the town features an old quarter with churches and a museum. Take the ferry to Ilha da Culatra (the first of two barrier islands) which has a harbour, pretty whitewashed cottages, sand dunes, several kilometres of beach, plus a handful of restaurants and bars. The other island is Ilha de Armona, which is pretty much deserted out of season, but has a few bars and a place to hire kite-surfing gear in the summer. Olhao has an excellent daily market (open till 13.00) with every type of fresh fish you could imagine, plus other artisanal goodies, as well as fresh fruit and vegetables.
Pay a visit to the village of Moncarapacho, to the northeast, or indeed Faro in the West, which has a whole days worth of sightseeing available, plus discover the archaeological site of Villa Romana de Milreu in the hills above the coast.
