Things to do

With its impressive architecture, beautifully lit bridges and fountains, leafy green parks and chic boutique shops, Bordeaux is possibly the most beautiful city in France. It’s more laid back than Paris, a city where long lunches and even longer apéros (evening drinks) are always in full swing on traffic-free squares in the sun.

On Sunday mornings you can join the locals at the market that stretches along the quais at Les Chartrons, and even join them for a late morning snack of oysters and white wine. Take in the best sights on foot, from the Pont de Pierre at Porte de Bourgogne to the attractive square around Port Cailhau and along to the Grosse Cloche, a large 18th century bell which swings above a former dungeon. From here you could head to Place Fernand Lafargue, where you’ll find many of Bordeaux’s younger residents enjoying lunch at one of the trendy and reasonably-priced cafes, burger bars or Asian restaurants, such as the popular Kokomo and Santosha.

In the afternoon you can cool your feet in the water of the Miroir d’Eau fountain, while admiring the stunning views of the Place de la Bourse building and the Garonne river. If you’re getting about by tram, your ticket also covers you for a ride across the river on one of the BAT3 ferry boats. You can catch a boat at various points along the river, enjoy a walk under the trees on the Rive Droite while getting a spectacular view of the city, before hopping on to the next shuttle back again.

The busy main pedestrian street of Saint Catherine, which runs 1.2 km from Place de la Comédie in the centre of the city to Victoire in the south, is the main shopping area in Bordeaux. Here you’ll find typical French high street shops, such as Fnac, and all the usual international fashion brands. At the northern end, near Galeries Lafayette, you’ll find the high end shopping street Cours de l’Intendance, where all the designer boutiques are located. Relax afterwards in the shade of the Jardin Public, or stop off to see the remains of a Roman amphitheater, the palais Gallien, just a short walk away.

Top attractions

There are two great viewpoints in Bordeaux, both from the top of church towers, Pey Berland, near the Hôtel de Ville, and the Flèche St. Michael (tower), in the heart of the Saint-Michel quarter. Both charge entry fees of around 5 euros, both have around 230 steps to the viewing platform.

The Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, located opposite the Grand Hôtel and Le Pressoir d’Argent - a 2 Michelin-starred restaurant famously owned by Gordon Ramsay - at Place de la Comédie, is one of the sightseeing highlights of the city. Next to it is the Place des Quinconces, one of the largest city squares in Europe, and home to the Monument aux Girondins fountain.

The recently opened Cité du Vin museum has become a popular attraction for wine lovers, with exhibitions, seminars and shows about the local wine grown in the Bordeaux region.

Best restaurants

If you’re keen to try a dish by Gordon Ramsay, but can’t stretch your budget to affording Le Pressoir d’Argent, book a table at the excellent, but more affordable Brasserie Le Bordeaux. Here you can dine on local and regional produce, with a choice of French classics and Ramsay’s signature dishes.

Another top choice for local, seasonal ingredients is Le Bouchon Bordelais, hidden down the backstreets near Place de la Bourse. Or enjoy some of the best fresh fish and seafood dishes at the ever popular Le Petit Commerce, in the attractive Saint-Pierre quarter.
