Things to do
Wherever you’re staying on the outskirts of Bordeaux, you’ll find charming towns, rolling hills and vineyards, lakes and plenty of things to do.
The town of Mérignac is a quiet spot, linked to Bordeaux city centre by the tram and located between the centre and Bordeaux Airport. Here you’ll find old stone buildings, historic monuments, small town churches and chateaux backed by sweeping vistas. In Pessac you’ll find the Zoo de Bordeaux, complete with lions, tigers and red pandas.
At both Bègles and Bruges you’ll find lakes with sandy beaches and a range of watersports. Le Lac at Bruges is particularly popular during the summer, offer a range of free activities such as kayaking, ping pong and other sports. Next to the beach you’ll find food trucks selling Asian street food which you can eat under the shade of the pine trees.
Other popular areas include Talence, home to many of the city’s universities, Cestas, Saint-Médard-en-Jalles and Villenave-d'Ornon.
Top attractions
Just a short taxi or tram ride away you’ll find all the exciting and historic attractions of the city of Bordeaux. The newly built Cité du Vin should be the first stop for any wine-lover. The contemporary building houses a modern exhibitions, complete with scientific-looking scent room where you can smell the different elements that give wines their own character, and a tasting session at the end.
In the centre itself, the most popular attraction is perhaps the Miroir d’Eau. Sat between Place de la Bourse and the Garonne River, it’s the perfect to cool your feet on a hot summer’s day, or take photos of the reflections of the buildings in the water. One of the other most photographed spots in the city is the Monument aux Girondins, at Quinconces. The monument consists of an impressive column, with an angel perched on top, and a large fountain complete with horses.
Best restaurants
Enjoy a more laid-back meal in the countryside at La Tupina, an iconic bistro serving typical southwestern French cuisine. The setting is farmhouse-style, with antique furniture and open fires. Another option is Halle Boca, an area along the riverfront that has recently been transformed to house cafes, covered market areas, bars and food boutiques. Or, if you’re hungry after visiting La Cité du Vin, grab something to eat in Les Halles de Bacalan. The renovated riverside hangar is home to a brand new market hall with gourmet stalls selling everything from burgers to oysters.
