Elounda offers everything you could want from a holiday on a Greek island, from tasty tavernas and welcoming pubs to beaches and sights to see. Other neighbouring beaches worth a visit include the more peaceful Driros Beach, just a short walk away from town, and the pebble beach at Plaka. About 15 minutes away by taxi you’ll also find the beach resort of Agios Nikolaos, which has some lively nightlife too.

There are some interesting places for sightseeing around Elounda, such as the submerged ancient city if Olous. The remains of the city include five large windmills which can be visited by the public. There’s also the ancient ruins of the Minoan Palace of Malia.
One of the most popular attractions in Crete is Spinalonga Island. Here, visitors come to see the old Venetian fortress and the abandoned leper colony, which was the inspiration behind Victoria Hislop’s book The Island.
