Things to see and do
Praia da Rocha has grown small beginnings into a major resort, offering a wide sweeping beach, a range of modern hotels, lots of amenities and things to do in the evenings. The beach is the longest on this part of the coast, although smaller, more secluded coves can be found not too far away. Beach cafes, watersports centres and parasols line the sands, with plenty of activities on offer.
The promenade that runs along the top of the beach is the place to be to watch the sunset, where holidaymakers can choose from the many bars, restaurants and nightclubs. There’s also a seafront casino, which puts on a nightly show, and lively Irish bars if you’re feeling far from home.
Top attractions
Be sure to visit Santa Catarina, a medieval fortress perched on a cliff. It’s the best place for views of the coast, and you see nearby Portimão Marina and its bustling bars and clubs. Portimão makes a great alternative for a night out and also has an older quarter that’s great to explore. In the summer, the Sardine Festival is a highlight, with great food, music and fireworks.
Another great place to visit is the town of Silves, with it big hilltop castle, a gothic cathedral and pretty town squares. For families, the top attractions are Zoomarine, a fantastic marine theme park, and the Slide and Splash water park.

Praia da Rocha has a wealth of restaurants to suit every budget, with a whole range of different cuisines on offer. For the best seafood around, pay a visit to Restaurante O Farol, where you can feast on mussels, fish dishes and desserts. Enjoy some great pizza at a great price when you eat at Pizzeria La Dolce Vita, which even does a ‘pizza buffet’. Or, for a taste of home, go for a Full English at Taffys Grill.
