Finally, a popular sight for many holidaymakers here, the small district of Selmun is a historical place of interest where you can learn more about the Knights of Malta and see the Selmun Palace.
Top attractions
Film buffs can explore the set of the 1980 film Popeye, starring Robin Williams and filmed here in Malta. Still a major attraction for tourists, the set of Sweethaven consists of colourful buildings that overlook the sea. The set has since been expanded to include swimming pools, restaurants, gift shops and boat trips for visitors, as well as entertainment for the whole family.
A completely different experience, although no less interesting, is a visit to the large WWII air raid shelters, near Mellieha’s Parish Square. The tunnels, which were dug by hand, stretch out over 500 metres and include a variety of rooms and corridors. It’s a fascinating place to explore and discover some of Malta’s history.
