Things to do

Holidays to Ciutadella offer a city break with a difference. As well as chic harbourside bars and a smart restaurant scene, you’ve got a cute old quarter and lovely sandy beaches nearby.

Upmarket Menorca

Ciutadella is set on the western edge of Menorca, with its cobbled streets clustered around a smart, yacht-filled harbour. It was the Balearic Island’s capital until the early 18th-century, and the city is crammed full of stately buildings and grand summer mansions built in its heyday.

Waterside spot

Standing shoulder-to-shoulder along the harbour’s edge are swanky restaurants, alfresco cafés, and tapas bars. After dark, you’ll find Menorca’s beautiful people packed into the upmarket wine bars or strolling along the waterfront.

Atmospheric old town

Leading back from the harbour is the city’s old quarter. At its entrance is the charming square of Placa des Born, bordered by elegant palaces and shaded outdoor cafés. Heading away from the square, the narrow lanes are filled with Medieval, Gothic and Moorish architecture. The city’s 13th-century cathedral is a must-see – built on the site of an old mosque, it has a Neo-Classic façade and a huge, marble altar.

While Menorca is more low-key than its neighbouring islands, Ciutadella still has plenty to offer in the nightlife stakes. Most of the action centres around the harbour, where you’ll find swish bars and a handful of clubs that keep the music going ‘til the wee hours.

Nearby beaches

When it comes to beaches, you’ve got plenty within easy reach. Cala des Degollador, a small patch of sand that’s popular with locals, is 15 minutes’ walk from the city centre. And a 10-minute drive will bring you to Cala’n Blanes, a good-looking, white-sand cove that’s hugged by pine-covered cliffs.

HOP ON A BOAT TRIP AROUND THE ISLAND

Explore the island from a different angle by jumping on one of the boats that chug away from Ciutadella’s harbour each day. Where you go will depend on which tour you pick, but expect to bob past photogenic little coves, rocky headlands and whitewashed villages as you sail along the coast. Some trips will even stop at secluded beaches for a cool-down dip.

When it comes to shopping, Ciutadella does a great line of handmade goods. On Friday and Saturday mornings, craft stalls fill the main square, laden with handcrafted jewellery, silverware and pottery. And during the summer, there’s a fantastic night market by the harbour. You’ll also find some lovely gift shops beneath the Moorish arches of Ses Voltes.

EAT SEAFOOD AT A RESTAURANT CARVED into THE CLIFFS

Come dinnertime, Ciutadella’s harbour is the place to be. It’s edged with eateries that range from smart, high-end restaurants to teeny tapas joints – some are even carved out of the honey-coloured cliffs. Seafood makes an appearance on most menus – try caldereta de langosta, a tasty stew made with Menorca’s trademark blue spiny lobsters.
