What to do in Prague?
Prague is the largest city of the Czech Republic and the capital. Nicknamed “the city of a hundred spires” it’s fast becoming one of Europe’s leading travel destinations. As well as shopping malls, over two hundred historic gardens and it’s very own picturesque river Vltava running through it, Prague is also home to some of the country’s finest buildings and architectural splendours.
Founded in the 12th century the Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí) is steeped in history and home to an impressive portfolio of significant buildings; the Old Town Hall, the Church of Our Lady before Týn, The Baroque Church of St Nicholas, the Gothic House at the Stone Bell, the Rococo Kinský Palace, the monument to Jan Hus and not forgetting the astronomical clock. A great place to wander and soak up the atmosphere or grab a morning break in one of the many colourful cafes or bars.
Another prominent building, perched up on a hill, (take the tram or walk) is Prague castle where the magnificent St Vitrus Cathedral can also be found. One could easily spend many hours here, walking the extensive grounds, visiting the beautiful Lobkowicz Palace with its fabulous art collection.
The Lesser town, within walking distance of the castle on the eastern side of Charles river, is much quieter than the Old town square and has a distinctly medieval feel with its narrow cobbled streets. Taste a traditional lunch of dumplings with beef tenderloins and gravy in a local restaurant, then walk across the famous Charles Bridge for pleasant views of the picturesque river the Vltava.
Catch a concert, and enjoy the delights of Prague’s classical music scene, at the Municipal House (Obecní dům), a staggering building both inside and out, with excellent examples of Art Nouveau architecture and design. Situated in the municipal square and just next door is the Powder Tower, one of the original 13 city gates in the old town.
A 30-minute walk (or take the tram) from the town centre is another hidden gem, the Vysehrad National Cultural Monument, far less crowded, which offers fantastic views of the river, the castle and Prague city all from one vantage point. Grab a coffee in one of the cafes, visit the beautiful church and see the gravestones of many past illustrious Czechs.
Take a trip to the Kafka museum, alongside the west of the River, to learn of the celebrate German-speaking Bohemian Jewish novelist Franz Kafka’s life and works. Regarded as one of the significant figures of 20th Century literature, a large rotating sculpture of Kafka’s head can be found just off Charvatova road on the east side of the river.
Kids are bound to enjoy a trip to the zoo on the banks of the river Vltava, just 20 minutes from the town centre. Many rare and threatened species are housed in this state of the art facility. A terrific opportunity to learn about nature and the animal kingdom: ride a tram to various exhibits whose purpose is to bring different worldwide eco-systems to life.
If you would like to explore beyond the city boundaries you should definitely visit the hot springs of Karlovy Vary, the giant gothic castle of Karlštejn and the city Plzeň, where pilsner beer was born.
