What to do in Obertauern?
The winter sports resort of Obertauern is located in the Radstädter Tauern in the Salzburger Land of Austria. The resort has 120km of pistes yet only a 600-metre vertical drop so is ideal skiing for beginners and intermediates, plus there are lots of activities for children. Obertauern is home to a Beatles memorial (four statues), as they filmed part of their ‘Help’ video here back in 1965. A few kilometres from Obertauern is the impressive Johannes waterfall, a decent hike along slippery terrain, so be sure to wear sensible shoes! For a more rustic ski experience visit the Zauchsensee resort which has excellent lifts, good food and something for all abilities. For adrenalin enthusiasts try ko-karting down the mountain in Schladming, fun for all the family; the go-karts just have brakes so after catching the gondola up the mountain you whizz back down in individual carts. Another good trip with children is the castle in Mauterndorf, which is fun to explore and boasts kids’ slides and climbing area, plus interactive exhibits. Lastly, for scenic views and enjoyable walks go trekking at the Naturpark Riedingtal, which is a valley surrounded by mountains plus there is a beautiful crystal clear lake.
