Things to see and do in Salzburg

Salzburg is best known for its music. The setting for the Sound of Music and former home of Mozart is the perfect destination for music-lovers. Whether you prefer to enjoy a concert by the Mozarteum Orchestra of Salzburg or discover the birthplace of the composer, there’s plenty to discover during your stay. Stop by the museum where you can see his bedroom, kitchen and living room.

A great activity at any time of the year, the Stiegl Brewery tour and tasting is interesting and educational, while offering plenty of opportunities to sample the beer. If the weather is warm, why not earn that beer with a stroll along the trails on Mönchsberg hill. You can get there easily with a walk from the old town, past Nonnberg Convent - where singing nun Maria (played by Julie Andrews) enrolls in the musical. For a more vigorous workout and even better views, hike to the top of Untersberg, or take in the panoramas after a scenic cable car ride up the peak.

Top attractions

Salzburg’s most recognisable building is the Festung Hohensalzburg, a 900 year old fortress that overlooks this city from the hilltop. Take a leisurely ride up to it in the Festungsbahn funicular, or you can take the steep walk to the top for the views. You can find out more about the city’s past with a visit to Salzburg Museum. Located in the stunning baroque Neue Residenz palace, the museum will take you on a guided tour of Salzburg from the Roman era to present day.

The other, must-see Salzburg palaces are Schloss Mirabell, a lavish building full of marble and frescos that is free to visit, and Hellbrunn Palace, whose pleasure gardens feature novelty fountains, a theatre and grottos. The last of the main sights is Salzburg Cathedral, with its twin pires, dome and sacred artifacts.

Best restaurants

Make sure your city break in Salzburg is special with dinner at Michelin-starred Esszimmer. It specialises in French cuisine and show-stopping mains. Magazin is another popular choice, where you will find a deli, wine shop and cooking school alongside a restaurant serving seasonal dishes. Finally, if it’s traditional hearty Austrian dishes you’re looking for, Zum Zirkelwirt is a comfortable inn with a great beer garden and classic meals.

March 31, 2023

At HolidayTaxis, we recognize that every traveler is different and may have their own preferences and requirements for their airport transfers. To accommodate this, we offer a diverse range of transfer vehicles for our customers to choose from, each with its own set of benefits and advantages.

For example, if you're traveling in a large group, our minibus or shared airport shuttle transfers might be the best option for you, as they can comfortably accommodate a larger number of passengers and their luggage. On the other hand, if you're traveling with just one or two companions, a private car may be more suitable for you as they offer a more intimate and personalised experience.
