Top attractions

The most powerful waterfall in North America, the Horseshoe Falls are the biggest part of Niagara Falls (which also comprises of the American and Bridal Veil Falls). Niagara falls straddles the Canada-US border. However the best view of them, if you’re on land, is from the Ontario side. One of the most popular ways of seeing the falls is with a boat cruise, either with the Hornblower Niagara Cruise, which departs from the Canadian side, or the famous Maid of the Mist, which departs from America. Don’t forget to pack a waterproof poncho!

Other things to do

Another way to see the falls, if you can afford it of course, is with a Niagara Helicopter Tour. The short nine-minute ride takes in the Niagara River Gorge, the hydropower station, lakes Erie and Ontario and the full splendour of the falls. Another option is the Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours. For those looking for a more thrilling ride, these boats go into the Devil’s Hole Rapids in the Niagara River Gorge at the base of the falls. Expect class-five rapids along the way!

Another way to see the falls, and the surrounding area, is from the top of the Skylon Tower. This 520-foot observation tower overlooks Niagara Falls and offers views out as far as Toronto and Buffalo. There’s also a revolving dining room. Beyond the falls there are plenty of other attractions while you’re in the area. Take a walk along Clifton Hill, a family-friendly version of Sunset Strip with lots of shops and restaurants. Take a ride in the Niagara SkyWheel, visit Ripley’s or the Haunted House, or see the stars at the Movieland Wax Museum.

Best restaurants

You’ll find plenty of fast food and restaurants serving hefty American portions here, but if it’s something a little more refined you’re looking for, get a table at Tide & Vine. This oyster house serves the best seafood in the area, with a choice of local wines. For something a little more laid-back, and refreshing, try a casual lunch at The Beer Garden. Or discover everything the area has to offer, with a Niagara Falls Food Tour.
