Things to do in Wiener Neustadt

Hauptplatz is the main town square of Wiener Neustadt, where you’ll find the Rathaus (town hall) and plenty of life and activity. Enjoy a coffee or breakfast in the square while people watching, do some shopping in the nearby stores or browse the market stalls. Don’t forget to take a look at the town hall, an interesting mix of architectural styles, and the Column of Mary (or Mariensäule). Afterwards you can take a stroll around the city walls and towers.

The local Linsberg Asia Therme Spa is a fantastic spa complex with numerous indoor pools, a thermal bath and saunas for anyone looking to indulge in a little relaxation during their stay. You can also book in for a treatment, massage or skin care ritual. Meanwhile sports fans may want to check out the Wiener Neustadt Stadium, where you can get tickets to watch an Austrian football team play.

Wiener Neustadt is an excellent base for hiking. There are various easy walks along the Grand Canal, which runs the length of the town. Take a walk up the hill to the Mariahilfberg shrine and church, and enjoy the views. The Myra Falls, to the west of the town, are surrounded by lots of woodland trails that lead up to the 70 metre falls. After you’ve finished exploring the ravine, why not stop for lunch at one of the nearby restaurants. Wildlife lovers will enjoy seeing the birds and scenery at Seewinkel National Park, but of course, the most beautiful national park near Wiener Neustadt is the Gesaeuse National Park. About 2 hours from the town by taxi, the park offers a scenic mix of valleys, dolomite rock formations, woods and alpine pastures to explore. There’s even the possibility for some water sports or rock climbing.

Top attractions

The Dom cathedral is an attractive 13th century building with a mix of Romanesque and Gothic design, well worth a visit during your stay. You may also want to pop into the Neukloster church, made famous as the first venue to hold a performance of Mozart's Requiem. Meanwhile history lovers will enjoy visiting the Militärakademie, a former castle turned military academy.

Best restaurants

Start your day at Cafe Bernhart, an attractive old-Vienna style cafe where you can enjoy a coffee and breakfast, or stick around to enjoy the lunchtime menu. Try some classic Austrian cooking at Hartig’s restaurant, by the Dom, where you’ll find one of the best beer gardens in town. Or for a tasty and filling meal at a great price, try Zum Weissen Rössl, where you can sample the goulash in the sun on the outdoor terrace.
