What to do in Florence

Florence, birthplace of the Renaissance, is the ultimate city break for culture-lovers. If you’ve come here to see some world-class art, then there’s no better place to start than the famous Uffizi Galleries. One of the best known, and oldest, art museums in the world, the Galleria degli Uffizi is home to masterpieces by the likes of Michelangelo, Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci.

Since the entire city of Florence is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you won’t have to explore far before coming across more examples of its stunning architecture. Wander around the Piazza della Signoria square, for example, and you’ll find a replica of Michelangelo’s statue of David (the original is in the Galleria dell'Accademia), the fountain of Neptune and the statue of Hercules and Cacus. To get a better view of the whole city, climb the 463 steps to the very top of the Duomo, Florence’s most iconic building.

Finally, it wouldn’t be a trip to Italy without experiencing some of the local food. The San Lorenzo Market is the largest in Florence and offers a real taste of the city. Here you’ll find the freshest products and local delicacies, and the first floor is dedicated to excellent bars and restaurants where you can enjoy a meal. Finally, don’t forget to try some real Italian gelato at one of the many gelaterias around town.

From the Arcadian beauty of Bagno A Ripoli's rolling hillsides and picturesque olive groves, to Vaglia's ancient remains of the Villa Medici di Pratolion and the Sanctuary of Monteserario, and the intact Renaissance-era city walls of Lucca, it is fair to say that there is more to discover of the Tuscany region than in the city of Florence itself.
